How deep should a stump be ground out?

“How deep do you grind?” is one of the first questions we get – here’s what’s standard, and when you might want to go deeper.

The standard grind

For most jobs we grind 100–300mm below ground level. That’s enough to get the stump well under the surface so you can lay turf, plant a garden or just be rid of the trip hazard – and so the stump won’t reshoot.

When to go deeper

If you’re building over the spot, putting in a driveway, a raised garden bed or a fence post, we can grind down to 400mm or more and grub out the bigger roots, so there’s nothing left to settle or get in the way later.

What about the roots?

Grinding removes the stump and the surface roots that radiate from it. For full root removal – building sites and subdivisions – we use the excavator and mulcher to grub the lot out to spec. For a backyard stump, surface grinding is usually all you need.
